Oxidized (Light-Colored) Sediments:(usually early-middle Holocene in age)

Brown, yellowish brown, or grayish brown loamy sediments that grade to sand and gravel at depth
Poorly drained facies may exhibit reduced colors at depth
Unit lacks stratification except in the lower, coarser part
Plant material (leaves, wood, stems, charcoal) is common in lower part
Moderately well-developed soils, formed into upper part, have well-expressed B and E (subsoil) horizons.
Unit is usually found beneath low terraces slightly elevated above modern floodplains.
2B and 2C horizons in some series may form in older glaciofluvial sediments.
The surface expression of the terrace is often subdued because of an overlying mantle of Camp Creek Member sediments.
Radiocarbon ages from the unit range from about 10,500 to about 3,000 years before present.
NRCS Map Units with these series are on stream terraces, floodplains, footslopes, alluvial fans.

The following series occur in NRCS Map Units on footslopes and alluvial fans where the Corrington Member is typically found.
On such landforms, if a buried soil is present, the sediments are Corrington; if absent, the sediments are Gunder Member.
NRCS Map Units for some of these series also occur in upland drainageways and stream terraces.
Corrington Member (usually early-middle Holocene in age)
The unit consists of vertically stacked, fining upward sediment packages.
At least one buried soil is present, typically at the top of fining upward sequencies.
Unit is found beneath alluvial fans and colluvial slopes along the margins of large- and moderate-sized valleys.
Deposited between about 9000 and 2500 years before present.

Series Not Classifiable to Either Member

This is an informally-defined lithostratigraphic unit describing DeForest Formation sediments characterized by a conformable (i.e., gradational) contact between the two members.
Dark, overthickened (cumulic) A horizons similar to Roberts Creek
Gray to olive brown Bg or Btg horizons similar to poorly drained facies of Gunder Member
This unit is interpreted as Roberts Creek Member overlying Gunder Member.
The contact between the two is conformable.
In pedogenic terms, the Roberts Creek Member is welded to the Gunder Member
NRCS Map Units with these series are on floodplains, stream terraces, footslopes/alluvial fans, upland drainage ways.

Dark Colored (Organic-Enriched) Sediments: (Usually Late Holocene in Age)

Very dark gray to grayish brown loamy sediments grading to sand and gravel at depth
Unit lacks stratification except in the lower, coarser part.
Plant material (leaves, wood, stems, charcoal) is common in lower part
Well-expressed soils with overthickened A horizons (topsoil layers) are developed into the upper part of the unit.
Unit is found on modern floodplains, generally in a narrow belt paralleling the modern channel.
Sediments were deposited between 4000 and 500 years before present.
NRCS Map Units with these series are on floodplains, upland drainageways, footslopes, alluvial fans, stream terraces.

Eolian sand: cf. Peoria Formation, sand facies

On uplands and stream terraces
Forms low dunes and sandsheets
On Wisconsinan-age terraces, eolian sand often wind-reworked sandy alluvium.

Lacustrine Sediments in Glaciated Terrains

These series form in silty lacustrine (lake-deposited) sediments

Glaciated uplands

These series form predominantly in till diamictons of the Dows and Sheldon Creek Formations
NRCS Map Units for these series occur on upland summits, sideslopes, backslopes, swales

Glaciofluvial (Outwash) Sediments

Sands or gravels within 150 cm of surface.
Occurs as supraglacial deposits on uplands (Dows Formation, Morgan Member).
Also underlies late Wisconsinan terraces, comprising the Henry Formation (Mississippi valley) and Noah Creek Formation (other Iowa valleys).
On terraces, a surface mantle of eolian sediments or fine-grained DeForest Formation sediments may be overlie the coarse sediments.
NRCS Map Units for these series occur on stream terraces, glacial lake or till plains, outwash plains, upland drainageways

Wisconsinan Terraces in Mississippi River tributaries

These series are formed in alluvium that includes lacustrine or slackwater sediments from Lake Superor-source meltwater floods.
These series occur primarily in the lower reaches of Mississippi River tributaries

Soils Formed in Eolian or Hillslope Sediments

surface texture ranges from silt loam to sandy loam

Loess-mantled Terraces

NRCS Map Units for these series include "bench" phases
The "bench phase" map units occur on terraces that have a surface mantle of late Wisconsinan loess.
Particularly in western Iowa, these map units, if low in the landscape, can be underlain by early-middle Holocene Gunder Member alluvium, not loess.

Mucks/Peats (cf. Woden Member)

Sediments filling semi-closed and closed depressions(late Wisconsinan through Holocene in Age)

Alternating zones of fine-grained colluvium, peat, and muck.
Organic sediments (peat and muck) are common, capping depositional units.
Can be buried by lighter-colored Camp Creek colluvium
Mineral sediment is usually a reduced light gray color at base, grading upward to black, organic-coated sediment
Base dates from 14,000 RCYBP in central Iowa to 12,000 RCYBP in northern Iowa
NRCS Map Units for these series are in concave depressions on glacial lake and till plains, upland drainageways, floodplains

Soils that are shallow to bedrock
